No dogs. You need to be well prepared when tramping on conservation land, especially on the longer, day walks. Ensure you have strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen.

The Western Okataina Walkway is an old forestry road that dates back to earlier last century when the area was logged for rimu, totara, rata and kahikatea. It is generally wide and well formed.

Pass through some stunning native bush. Absorb amazing views of Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti from the Whakapounakau Trig.

Mountain biking

The Western Okataina Walkway is a challenging mountain bike ride.

It can be ridden in both directions but if you start from Millar Road, you'll experience an exhilarating downhill from Whakapoungakau Trig all the way to the Outdoor Education Centre.

How to get here

The track has three entry points - the Okataina Education Camp and Waipungapunga carpark (both on Okataina Road) and off Millar Road, Lake Okareka.
