Waikato Esplanade, Ngaruawahia

Te Awa walk & cycleway stretches along the Waikato River, from Ngaruawahia in the north to Karapiro in the south.

TE AWA IS FOR CYCLISTS & PEDESTRIANS and caters to people of all ages and abilities and was designed for both cyclists and pedestrians. The path is generally 3m wide, flat and made of concrete but does include a couple of very short but steep hills.

Ngaruawahia to Hamilton Gardens

Distance: 27km

Cyclists: 2 hours each way

Walkers: 5 hours, 30 mins each way

In Hamilton, you're never far from award-winning cafes, artisan coffee roasters and tasty leisurely lunches.

This is the latest section of Te Awa starting at Ngaruawahia Domain, just a stone's throw from the Hakarimata Scenic Reserve.

This section features the Perry Bridge, one of the longest walk/cycle bridges in New Zealand.

Hamilton CBD to Avantidrome

Distance: 24km

Cyclists: 1 hour, 40 min each way

Walkers: 4 hours, 45 min each way

Avantidrome to Lake Karapiro

Distance: 15.2km

Cyclists: 1 hour each way

Walkers: 3 hours, 30min each way

My wife and I have cycled the complete trail in stages. It is a top class, well paved, easy cycle.
The Breaking Bread Cafe in Ngaruawahia, Hamilton Gardens Cafe and The Nash in Cambridge are great spots for coffee.
Use you bell to let walkers know you are coming.
