Cooks Cove Walkway, located north of Gisborne, weaves through light bush and open grassland to the clifftops that lead down into Cooks Cove. After approximately 20 minutes, the walkway reaches a viewing platform overlooking Cooks Cove.
From Cooks Cove, visitors can explore the Hole-in-the-Wall rock formation and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust memorial, which commemorates Captain Cook’s visit to the area to repair his ship and take on fresh supplies in 1769.
Some sections of this track cross private land and visitors are asked to stick to the marked route, respect all signposted conditions of access and follow the New Zealand Outdoor Access Code.
The walkway is closed from 1 August to Labour weekend each year for lambing season.
