Levin offers a wonderful visitor destination that is so much more than convenient, accessible, affordable and with a proven and pleasant microclimate.
The largest town in the Horowhenua District holds hidden secrets and pleasant surprises, all whilst blessed with friendly people, history, culture, social and natural environments.
Bordered by the Tararua Range to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west, Horowhenua has many side roads to lead you to parks and reserves, gardens, bushwalks, rivers, lakes, sandy beaches and coastal walkways.
Covering just over 1000 square kilometres, the District stretches from Himatangi in the north to just north of Otaki River in the south and has a total population of around 30,000 people - 20,000 in Levin, just over 5000 in Foxton and Foxton Beach, and just under 5000 in Shannon.
Conveniently located right on State Highways 1 and 57, as well as the North Island main trunk railway line, Levin is within easy reach of Palmerston North, Wanganui, Kapiti Coast and Wellington.
Levin is also an easy town to drive, cycle and walk around and retains its small-town New Zealand feel.
Thanks to its rich alluvial soil and mild climate Levin is renowned for its market gardening, horticulture and farming. In fact, such is the output from the land, the area is known as the 'market garden of the lower North Island’, with added benefits of having a selection of fresh fruit and vegetable roadside stores.
While market gardening, horticulture and farming remain the drivers of the local economy, this is backed by a significant manufacturing, food processing, construction and service industry base. The entire area is currently experiencing steady growth in commercial, industrial and residential expansion, which is expected to continue over the next 10 years.
Levin offers a choice of three supermarkets, a very comfortable cinema, a variety of cafes, restaurants and takeaway food outlets. The town also has an RSA and Cosmopolitan Club.
