Katikati in the Bay of Plenty is situated on a beautiful stretch of coastline that encompasses, in just a few kilometres, many of the features that make New Zealand such a special place: from the rolling surf to the tranquil harbour, thermal pools, sub-tropical gardens, orchards and farms on the fertile fringe of land sloping up to the bush-clad hills of the Kaimai Mamaku ranges.
Perfectly located within a two hour drive from three major cities – Tauranga, Rotorua and Hamilton - and many beautiful holiday spots, Katikati is a bustling, friendly, small town with a great community spirit. There is plenty on offer to fill in a few days while visiting.
It is known as New Zealand’s Mural Town for good reason - the Katikati Open-Air Art project is a community-based initiative designed to celebrate the unique identity and heritage of Katikati and the surrounding area through murals that highlight specific historical, cultural and environmental influences. With currently 53 murals and sculptures in the town’s open air art gallery, you can stroll at leisure or take a guided tour of the town’s history.
Also unique to the town is the Katikaticuisine.com food trail. Intended for self-drive visitors, it enables you to enjoy the easy going pace of the countryside and discover the area’s wonderful artisan food producers.
Designed to take you from plant to plate, you can gather your seed and edible plants, discover fresh seasonal produce and gather up armfuls of cheese, salami, breads, and goodies to take away with you during your visit. Whether it’s a day trip out, or a weekend away, it’s all here in Katikati. To avoid disappointment remember to check the opening times of the operators or phone for an appointment.
