Lower-lying parts of Cobden Island, a wetland, are being turned into a whitebait sanctuary with over 2 km of channels dug out so far, with more planned over the next 3 years using DOC funding. This project was started two and a half years ago and over 9000 native plants have been planted, mainly flax, along their margins. Whitebait are already using the channels, which we have discovered also make a very pleasant round trip by canoe. Walking tracks are being developed, access to them is from the floodwall at the end of Cardwell St. Cobden. All of this is on Grey District Council land so it is publically accessible so this sanctuary is becoming a recreation area as well.
