Founded in 1872 with the arrival of 21 Norwegian & Danish settler families, Dannevirke is now the largest community in the Tararua District and is well serviced with a modern hospital, two secondary schools and a growing commercial sector.

Dannevirke provides many services for its large rural community and is well equipped with retailing, banking, accounting, legal advisory and insurance services.

The Tararua District, (totalling 424,000 hectares) is of near-rectangular shape. The Tararua District is affectionately known as ‘New Zealand’s River Region’ because of the hundreds of rivers and streams that traverse its borders - the largest being the Manawatu River and its tributaries (Mangahao, Mangatainoka, Makakahi, Makuri and Tiraumea rivers).

The five commercial centres in the district include Pahiatua, Eketahuna, Norsewood, Woodville and Dannevirke - all with their own special characteristics.

With it distinct Scandinavian Heritage, the town’s cemeteries are of considerable importance historically, and the settlers’ cemetery attracts many visitors. The Gallery of History provides an in-depth look at Dannevirke from the 1870s onward. The town also has a proud Maori history, and at Makirikiri Marae you can admire the carvings at the Aotea meeting house. Dannevirke’s Fantasy Cave is a must-see for families with young children; the Viking Ship playground in the Upper Domain is another family attraction.
