Background on this year's event:

The post-Covid community come-back. In a kilt.

Ten years ago, a resilient community came up with an idea to raise spirits (including the odd dram) after the devastating Canterbury earthquakes - the Hororata Highland Games were born. Now, they’re meeting a new, post-Covid challenge with confirmation that the games, and birthday celebrations will take place on Saturday 7th November 2020 at the Hororata Domain.

The Games also have a new theme: “A Scottish festival with a Kiwi twist”. (Think: Stubbies meet sporrans.)

The Hororata Highland Games attract 10,000 people annually, and see 500 competitors in Scottish events including; caber tossing, highland dancing and pipe band competitions. All surrounded by a rich tapestry of culture and tastings.

220 volunteers join Clan Hororata to make the Games happen.

Cindy Driscoll, Executive Officer Hororata Community Trust says this will be an important festival not just for Hororata but all of Canterbury “Our community loves welcoming people from all over New Zealand to the Hororata Highland Games and we can’t wait to celebrate its 10th birthday.”
