MHF Towns brings you more country at the Wairarapa Country Music festival

MHF Towns brings you more country… The Wairarapa Country Music festival was quite a memorable three day event last weekend… You can’t beat the idyllic setting of the Taurenikau Racecourse with onsite parking made seamless by our wonder Wairarapa NZMCA team’s co-ordination (another amazing area who have volunteered their time for the association). These leisurely 3 days run into perfect evenings of music on the lawn or in the historic grandstand. The music didn’t disappoint with Coopers Run backing up headliner Jodie Doreen. Taurenikau would like to invite you back next year with the promise of an even more amazing line up in the pipeline.

There was a fantastic response to the idea of taking part with people of similar abilities & a common interest, & using our own vans as transport & accommodation.

With a final complement of 1 bus, 3 caravans, & 8 motorhomes. 2  from Tauranga & 4 from Christchurch, and 1 each from Napier, Lake Hawea, Hamilton, Picton & Whangamata, & a total of 21 riders. We all met up at Les Hansen’s, Freeths Rd. Koromiko, property to get to know each other and be briefed on the week’s schedule of biking, exploring, and socialising.

The riding started in Picton with explorations of the wide range of tracks & trails along The Snout, the on the new Picton to Ngakuta Bay track. A quick ride back to Picton, fetch our vans for an overnight with pot-luck meal at The Linkwater Motels. Simon & Helena Lamb, from Cranky Goat Cheeses, gave us an insight into the finer details of manufacturing goat cheese. Many of us made purchases to enjoy later in the wek.

Melissa & Adam Coleman were fantastic hosts, even providing fresh pikelets for morning tea, on our return from the  morning’s ride Anikiwa to Mistletoe Bay via the Queen Charlotte Track.

After hot showers, morning tea/lunch, on our way again to the Belgrove Tavern, near Wakefield. For those who don’t know, this is a POP [not in our directory]

With amazing hostess, Jackie, great food, and a gorgeous outdoor garden/BBQ area out back. There is no charge, just please buy a drink or two, or try the scrumptious steak burgers.

We planned to ride through The Spooner Tunnel, but unfortunately this is still closed with some “structure” issues. Instead we all rode to Wakefield, for coffee etc at Rhubarb Café, then…this was good…the guys rode back to Belgrove for our vans etc. AND the girls all biked through to Tahuna, with a stop at Wooden Spoon Cafe in Richmond for lunch. Was a wonderful 51km ride, all on trails.

Parking over for 2 nights out the back at Tahuna Motor Camp, we all made choices about rides, some to Mapua [fish’n’chips], and back, on the Great Taste Trail, while the more adventurous took on Dun Mountain ,five even going over the top & down The Coppermine Trail. That’s tough stuff.

Final nights were spent camped up at Marchwood Park, Motueka, POP  [in the directory], for rides around Motueka &  Riwaka [for ice-creams] ; The Riwaka Resurgence & over to Kaiteriteri, again mostly on trails.  Another pot-luck meal on Friday, and finishing with dinner at the RSA Motueka,[who run a $2 each away shuttle ], our amazing week came to an end. 21 happy, smiling faces & just a few sore b..s.

Park up, and enjoy the entertainment!

There's something for everyone over Easter this year. An exciting Jazz festival in Tauranga, a much loved airshow in Omaka, and lastly a very special event to help support the town of Kaikoura.
